Thomas J. Kapels, AIA, ASLA, NCARB, LEED Green Associate attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he earned his Bachelors of Science in Architectural Studies in 1998 and his Masters of Architecture in 2001 with emphasis on campus and recreational planning. He entered military service in 2000 as a member of the Army National Guard. He attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Gordan for radio communications (MOS 31C). In 2002, he attended the Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC) at Camp Ashland and was promoted to Sergeant.
In 2003, Mr. Kapels was called into active duty along with the 110th Medical Evacuation Battalion to serve in Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Upon return from service overseas, Mr. Kapels enrolled in the Officer Candidate School (OCS) and graduated as the honor graduate of Class 48. Mr. Kapels took the oath of office in 2005 as a commissioned officer in the Army. He attended the Engineer Officer Basic Course (EOBC) at Fort Leonard Wood and was assigned to standing up the 623rd Engineering Company (vertical) of the National Guard. During this time, he also served as a project manager for the National Guard's Construction and Facility Management Office (CFMO).
Mr. Kapels transferred to the 947th Engineering Company (horizontal) at Fort Carson in 2007. In the summer of 2008, he participated in the National Guard's riot control support for the Denver police during the Democratic National Convention held in Denver, Colorado.
Mr. Kapels left military service in 2009 to focus on his civilian career as an architect. That same year he received his license as a registered architect. Two years later, he achieved his second license as a registered landscape architect. While practicing architecture, Mr. Kapels has been involved with leading the design efforts on over $100 million in military design-build projects that have resulting in two LEED-Gold and five LEED-Silver certified buildings. His project experience ranges from small renovations up to multi-million dollar new construction projects.
In 2012, Mr. Kapels founded TK-Architecture, LLC as a veteran owned business that is dedicated to serving our miltary service personnel, veterans, and local heros within the community by providing design services for sites and facilities of government projects. In 2013, TK-Architecture became a verified Veteran Owned Small Business (VOSB) by the Department of Veterans Affairs Center of Veteran Enterprise (CVE). In 2014, TK-Architecture became certified as a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Business (SDVOSB). Mr. Kapels continues to serve in a leadership role as the president and principal of TK-Architecture.
